Note: ! never give 5 stars because I have never read the perfect book.
Note 2: This review is for all 4 books in the New Homefront series (and the same review in all 4 book reviews) because I didn't stop to review after reading each one, I just immediately started the next one.

This is a great series, with characters that are well developed and believable. From what I remember, there were very few spelling errors or grammar errors (although these may be just stylistic).

The author has put a lot of thought and effort into the what, why and how of everything discussed in the books.

The story line is quite good, and believable (even if there are a couple of "boy that was lucky" situations). While the outcomes of most of the situations in the books could very well happen in the way the author portrayed them, I could also see some of the outcomes happening much differently. This is not to take away from the books, but rather, in my opinion, a good thing because it makes you think about what is happening and why it is happening the way it is, and what the consequences may be down the road.

The books cover a wide variety of locations and methods of traveling that I have not seen in other books, and each one seems realistic (I don't have experience with some of them so I don't know technically if it correct, but it appears that it would be) and is detailed in a manner that not only shows the authors knowledge of each, but also gives some good detailed information for those that want it.

I will say that book 1 especially and book 2 to a lesser extent are somewhat "slow" due to the time spent on details and character development, but that is not a knock on the books and does not take away from them in any way. I think this is important to point out because some people may be turned off by this and stop reading, but the story does pick up and is definately worth reading.

I have read many series where after 1 or 2 books, the story becomes "same problems - different day" and are basically a rehash of the same type of situations that were in earlier books with a different series of characters. That is NOT the case with these books. As the series progresses, the characters face new challenges and take on different tasks as would be expected over a period of time.

Also, each book completes the story in that book and has a "hook" for the next book, but does not leave the story of the current book unfinished.

Another thing that I enjoyed with this series is there are scenarios that make you think. Some are "would I do it that way", but some are more of a "moral" question of "would I really risk it" or "is the risk worth it" type of situation that makes you question how you would react to the same situation given the same or similar circumstances.

The books in this series are interesting from the point that you can learn a lot from them by reading them slowly and taking notes of things like items in BOBs or things needed in a SHTF scenario, etc. Or you can read the books as a quick read by skimming over the specific item/instructional details without losing the story. For me there were a couple of times in books 1 and 2 where the details kind of interfered with the story, but not to the extent that many of the books in this genre do.

Overall I would recommend the series to anyone who enjoys Post Apoc fiction, and especially to those that want a more thought provoking series, or who want more details on the what could be needed and how to manage in the Post Apoc world.

The Guardians The New Homefront Volume 2 Steven Bird 9781507808900 Books Reviews

An excellent addition to book one. The author continued to build the characters and provided realistic events that would happen in such a state as this. How the author connected the characters was great, but the loss of certain characters was heart wrenching. I like how there is plenty of explanation of how they perceived things happening around the United States to add to their current problems. I was worried that book 2 picking up a year after the collapse would leave a lot of gaps in the story, but the author did an excellent job of bringing the reader up to speed.
In this, the second volume in The New Home front series, we meet new characters and travel with Nate and Luke, two brothers, along with Rachel, as they try to reach East Tennessee. Having found information that their mom is looking for her son's vision ham radio contact Nate is determined he will reach their mom no matter what it takes. Packed with surprises and lot's of action, you will enjoy this sequel to The Last Layover.
As usual, happy reading and be prepared by getting prepared.
The greatest weapon a person can have is a sharp mind. The author does a great job of giving some advice and practical application of survival on a homestead in a SHTF scenario and couples that with believable characters, moments of real emotion, and a heck of an ability to tell a story. I lived this story, page by page, moment by moment right alongside the main characters. Some of the issues were difficult to read about when you consider it could happen in real life to real people that you care about, but we're handled delicately and with just the right amount of sensitivity. Oh man, what an adventure!
I just read this 2nd book in Steven Bird's Homefront trilogym which continues the story of people trying to survive and re-establish communities after our society has faced a major shutdown. Adding new characters with their efforts tocreach the Homestead and those there building it up and trying to protect gives a well-rounded approach and develops an empathy and rapport with the characters. Like the first, it is fast paced, well balanced and definitely thought-provoking. I totally enjoyed it and look forward to reading the 3rd book in the series, that I just bought. Highly recommend this book and series.
I have read all of Steven Bird's books and they are very well done. I especially appreciate this author's ability to use the english language without the need of swear words or crass details. But I have been reading this genre for several years and nearly quit Book 2; The Guardians after reading 95%. "Major hardships, then family reunited, then women stolen" is so overused I wonder if all the authors get together for a weekend camp-out to discuss future plot plans. Thankfully, Bird came through, I was surprised and I purchased Book 3.
Oh what a great read! This one was better than the first one! I really enjoyed all of details of how the co-op comes about and how neighbors form a guardianship to watch over each other. If ever SHTF I sure do hope that many neighboring farms and homes will become like this. I don't want to give anything away, so get a pot of coffee and sit down and read. You won't be sorry you did. I feel as though the story gets better as it goes on, the details are really nice and even helpful for preppers at times. It is def worth the money to purchase it. Never a dull moment! My only one complaint is that it is very "man" centered, as far as what the guys do and not so much the ladies, the ladies of course are talked about and do some things, but I would love to see more action from the girls!
Note ! never give 5 stars because I have never read the perfect book.
